Technical Stuff

Q. Do I need any special software to join About My Age

No, About My Age is designed to run on all operating systems and web browsers. However, we recommend you use Firefox, a free open-source browser that we have found to be safer, faster, and more stable than most of the others.

Q. How do I make aboutmyage.com my homepage?

Although all browsers and operating systems work slightly differently, the following instructions should work in most current browsers.

Go to the page that you want to select as your homepage (this link will take you back to ours in a new window).

Open the tools menu in your browser - this may be called Tools, Edit, Firefox, Opera or Safari (depending on your browser and operating system). Then select the tab marked 'General', 'Preferences', 'Options' or 'Internet Options'.

You may see a button marked 'Use current page' or 'Use current'. If so, click this button then click OK. The page you were visiting should be saved as your homepage and you won't need to do anything else.

If not, look for a box entitled 'Homepage', 'Homepage location' or similar, which will contain the URL (web address) of your current homepage. Type , or the address of the page that you want, into this box and click OK. Your new homepage will be set.

If you need further help with this, try checking your browser's Help menu.

Q. The site looks funny/strange on my computer.

we make every effort to ensure that the site displays on all modern computers and operating systems, but it's always possible we've overlooked something. If you find a page that you believe is broken somehow then please use the feedback form to report it.

Q. When I log on the page is too big for my screen and I can't see everything. I have to use the slide bar at the bottom of the page to see what's on the right hand side.

If you have an "older" screen, it may be your resolution. You can find this in your settings. Usually (but not always) they can be found by clicking on the Start button on the bottom left of your screen.

Go to Settings. Go to Control Panel. Go to Display. Go to Settings. You should be able to adjust your resolution down to fit in the whole page. Please be aware that this will make everything much smaller and you might have difficulties reading smaller print..

Q. When I click on the radio it takes over my screen and I can't get back to my homepage.

The radio will open in a new window and once you have chosen your favourite radio station, that will open in another smaller window. Once you have the radio going, you can use the "minus" sign at the top right hand side of your screen to minimise that page and do the same for the smaller screen that is playing the music.

We will always be in the background.

Q. I logged out of the site, but the radio is still playing.

You must exit from the radio windows to stop the radio. They open in new windows and although you have minimised them, they are still there.

Q. When I search the Directory and find something that I'd like to do or see, it doesn't tell me where it is.

That's because wherever we found it didn't offer us any additional detail.

Use your newly found computer skills and search for it on Google or your preferred search engine. We want you to have fun with your computer. Even better, if you do find some additional information that will help improve the directory or anything else on the site, please let us know.

Q. The purple headings turn green when I put my cursor over them. What does that mean?

When you put your cursor over the purple headings they do indeed turn green, but the main heading is a darker green. If you want the main heading, click on that darker green heading. Of course if you want something in the drop down menu, click on that.
